Hi there,

I’m no linguist but basically as far as I know the triconsonantal root for Islam is s-l-m which is the same root for the word salam which means peace. The words are related, but as far as I’ve heard ‘Islam’ is closer to that Answers.com definition than ‘peace’ itself. I dunno if that helps, and how accurate it is, but yeah.

And Jihad does mean to struggle for what is good, for example Jihad al-Nafs is struggling to improve yourself. The word is also used to refer to wars fought for the sake of Allah.
